Tons of plastic and styrofoam disposables made from petroleum-based chemicals and additives are thrown away every year. Petroleum is not only becoming an increasingly scarce resource, it also causes pollution and toxicity every step of its use - extraction, transportation, refining and production. Plastic and styrofoam are not biodegradable and they persist in the environment for hundreds of years, causing further pollution.
